Task:
Over the next few days you are going to work in a team and determine how
astronomers gather information about distant planets and stars. You will then be
asked to answer several questions about the information you gathered.
Procedure:
Day 1 - 2
Your class will be broken up into teams of four students. Each team will
research the concepts that they will be assigned and come to agreement as to
the validity of their information. You must keep a record of where you find
the information.
Team 1. Doppler effect and Measuring distance through triangulation.
Team 2. Spectroscopy (bright line spectrum) and Red Shift.
Team 3. Cephied variables and Period luminosity law.
Team 4. Astronomical instruments and Inverse Square relationship.
Day 3
In class each team will break up into groups consisting of one member from
each team. You are to share the information with each member of the new group.
Day 4
You will be handed two questions that must be answered during the class
period. Your sources of information (for the topics you
researched day 1-2) are to be documented using MLA format and must be word
processed and handed in with your answers.
