Book:  If you are in the CHS Library, you will find 2 stand-alone computers in the stack area that are always available to search. 

But....if you are not in the library, you will need to use this icon:    You will be able to find it on any of the CHS Library web pages.

You can search for information by keyword, subject, title or author.  Remember, spelling is very important.  If you receive 0 hits, try browsing.  (The database is very picky about punctuation and spelling.) 

If you don't find the book you are searching for and you need it for a project, you can search the MaineInfoNet resources and ask Mrs. Brown to interlibrary loan the book.

Magazine Article:       This icon will take you to MARVEL, the Maine Research Databases.  If you look at the topics, you can choose a database based on your subject.  It would be good to start with Academic Search Premier or Mas Ultra - School Edition, then go to another choice if you do not find what you need. *Remember to limit to full text search.  There are also some magazines on-line.

Wilson Select is available in the Virtual Library. Offers a more complete and scholarly listing of periodicals.

Newspaper Article:  Again, go to the MaineInfoNet Research Databases.  Click on Maine Newsstand to access full-text articles from Bangor Daily News and Portland Herald.   *Remember to limit to full text search.  World-wide newspapers on-line

Encyclopedia Article:  We subscribe to several encyclopedias. 

In the Grolier Suite: 

• Encyclopedia Americana - the best, most complete offering

• Groliers Multimedia Encyclopedia - Academic American

In MARVEL and in NICI VL:

• Encyclopedia Britannica - offers the encyclopedia on all age levels; provides excellent multi-media clips, web links, and articles. 

Encyclopedias by Subject Matter:

Science: New Book of Popular Science in the Grolier Suite and AccessScience (McGraw Hill) in the Virtual Library. (see icons above)  

Dictionary: The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the most extensive and complete offering today.  Find this in  the Virtual Library.

There are also dictionaries on-line.

Translation Sites:  BabelFish  More can be found on the General Foreign Language Page.

Internet Site -

•  Learn to find the best engine for your search
• Invisible Web searches - Use this for "resources whose contents cannot be indexed by traditional search engines.  These include databases, archived material, and interactive tools such as calculators and dictionaries."
• Search the CHS Library WebPages using Google from the Main Page of the site.  Search Google by clicking on "Google" and going to Google's search page.
• Find keywords quickly on your internet page by using the Find feature in your browser.  Control key and the "F" key will open a Find box.
