The ABBY Award, the American Book Sense Book

Alex Awards

The Alex Award is in honor of Margaret Edwards, called "Alex" by her friends, for her pioneering services in Young Adult Literature.  She was committed to using adult books with teenagers and incorporating then into the reader's advisory training programs they instituted.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award was first given to Laura Ingalls Wilder in 1954.  The award honors an author or illustrator whose books give a lasting contribution to literature over a period of years for children. The award is given every 3 years.

The Margaret A. Edwards Award was established in 1988

 in children’s literature for young adults. The interesting thing is the author must be living!  The award is named for the late Margaret A. Edwards, a children’s librarian in Baltimore, Maryland for more than 30 years.

National Book Awards

The National Book Awards has been a tradition since March 16, 1950,  when a consortium of book publishing groups sponsored the first  annual National Book Awards Ceremony and Dinner in 

New York City. The goal was to enhance the public’s awareness 

of exceptional books written by fellow Americans, and to increase

 the popularity of reading in general. Since then, the National Book Awards have become the nation’s preeminent literary prizes.
