World Cultures                   

A Celebration

 

1.                  Select one culture from the following areas—African, Native American, Australian, New Zealand, Norse, Celtic, Polynesian, Jamaican, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, South American, Greek, Roman, or Egyptian.

2.                  In groups of three/four, research the stories, customs, and culture of the area of your choice. You must include the following:

--A creation or hero myths, including their belief system

--The male-female roles, including dating, marriage, and    roles in relationships, family, and community

--One other interesting aspect of your own choice, including art (music, art, literature, crafts); rites of passage; customs, dress, ceremonies; political system; climate/ living conditions; sports and entertainment.

3.         As a group, you will present your culture to the class with each of you being responsible for one aspect. You must include the following:

--story-telling (You must tell it without reading it.)

--discussion of male/female roles—then and now

--one or two of the other topics

4.         Each of you must create quality visual, which may include dress, some model artifact, music, art work, craft, and so on. Explain the significance of the item.

5.         Each of you must make a food from the area--an explanation of the significance of the food is required. (Don’t spend too much money.)
