Statement Caribou
High School is committed to creating a safe learning environment where students
can pursue a rigorous, personalized and equitable course of studies. The
atmosphere at Caribou High School fosters self-esteem, values diversity, and
promotes life long learning. Guided by the Maine
Learning Results, the staff holds
high expectations for all students and encourages them to reach their full

Speaks effectively …
The student uses appropriate vocabulary with varied inflection, maintains
good posture
and eye contact, and has few errors in grammar. The presentation employs a
logical method of organizing information and uses appropriate transitions
between ideas. The student includes adequate content with a clearly developed
focus and employs sources of support for the topic. 2.
Writes effectively … Student
writing demonstrates logical and coherent organization with an appropriate
awareness of audience. The topic is adequately developed with effective word
choices and few errors in the use of Standard English conventions. 3.
Reads with comprehension … The student
identifies important information and makes appropriate connections between new
and previous readings and experiences. The student reads a variety of material
for information, pleasure and personal growth, and distinguishes between fact
and opinion. 4.
Uses technology effectively … The
student accesses meaningful and valid information on the internet and uses
ethical practices concerning the use of technology. The student demonstrates the
ability to word process, use spreadsheets, make presentations, and integrate
these applications. 5.
Uses critical thinking skills … The student accurately identifies and summarizes
issues by evaluating for validity, assumptions and perspective. The student
analyzes key information, questions, and problems by identifying and considering
the influence of context on an issue. Reasoning is used to draw conclusions,
defend viewpoints, and identify implications or consequences. 6.
Uses problem solving skills … The student
identifies and describes the issues related to a problem and collects, analyzes,
and compares information to make critical decisions. The student interprets data
to generate possible solutions and develops a plan to resolve the problem.

demonstrate proficiency in the indicators assessed by Caribou High School’s

Students will make decisions about their behavior based on the knowledge
that their choices will have implications for their future success. All students
are expected to exhibit honesty and integrity at all times. 2.
Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity for differences and similarities among
people in our diverse society … Students will have a knowledge and tolerance of
the cultural diversity that exists in our society. 3.
Demonstrates a maturing work ethic … Students will show growth in their acceptance of
workload, quality of work, and timeliness. They will continue to mature in their
ability to initiate tasks and follow through with them. 4.
Makes informed decisions concerning personal health and safety … Students will understand that the lifestyle
choices they make will either enrich or
detract from their quality of life. 5.
Demonstrates positive conflict resolution skills …
Students will demonstrate the ability to reframe conflicting interests
into mutual problem model. Students will value and seek nonviolent and other

They have knowledge of the people, history and traditions that have

Performs community service … The
students’ primary focus is to engage in activities that provide service and
benefits to the community without
financial compensation. They perform 60 hours of mandatory documented service
