Students identified for the Gifted and Talented Program have the option of participating in a number of courses (usually held during activity period) throughout the year. Academic courses range from math puzzlements and everyday law to play writing and psychology. Students identified in the visual arts have been offered a variety of art experiences with some examples being - sculpture, mask making, book arts, painting and studio studies of famous artists and their styles. Identification for the program covers a wide range of assessment procedures, both objective (achievement scores, IQ, etc.) and subjective (teacher recommendation, projects, parent and self-referral, etc.). Students may at times participate in programs with student's form neighboring districts. An example of this is the Girls and Gifts Program for fifth and sixth grade academically able girls designed to encourage them in the areas of math and science. Most importantly, students are challenged within the classroom environment by their teachers through acceleration and/or enrichment activities. |
