America's Story from America's Library - Civil War, 1860 - 1865 - From the Library of Congress.

CivilWar@Smithsonian - Produced by the National Portrait Gallery, the Web site's mission is to display and interpret artifacts that the museum has been collecting and preserving since the time of the Civil War.  Many of these artifacts are national treasures and works of art, say the site's organizers, and most of them have not been available to the public in decades.  Right now, there are about 250 objects featured on the site.  In the months ahead, organizers hope to develop educational materials designed to further understand the war.

Civil War Generals - Indexed alphabetically, this site lists confederate and union generals from the United States Civil War. Find brief listings with birth and death dates, years of service, branch of service, bibliographies of further readings, and in some cases Web sites. Civil War Links : from AOL - Probably the best listing of links which are organized in a very usable fashion and updated frequently.

Civil War Soldier in the Wild Cat Regiment - A Civil War soldier in the Wild Cat Regiment documents the Civil War experience of Captain Tilton C. Reynolds, a member of the 105th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers.  This collection looks into the lives of a Union soldier and his family.

  Civil War Treasures from the New York Historical Society  - This site includes "recruiting posters for New York City regiments of volunteers; stereographic views documenting the mustering of soldiers and of popular support for the Union in New York City; photography showing the war's impact, both in the north and south; and drawings and writings by ordinary soldiers on both sides." Browse subject headings, name, or archival name. Searchable by keyword. The Before, During, and After the Civil War presentation provides a good background. Civil War Resources on the Internet : 1830-1890 : Abolitionism through Reconstruction - from Rutger's University. Not a very appealing site - but a wealth of links in chronological order.

Civil War Site from the 1st Dragoons - An excellent index of people during this time period plus many other links of interest.  Includes information on Chamberlain. (blocked by Bess)

Civil War.Com -A very complete site with an index to access a timeline, battles, places, music, additional links, and documents. Easy to use.

Researching People of the Civil War Era - The United States Civil War Center. An excellent overview of how to conduct research along with other helpful links. Be sure to search for Maine links under the state archival resources.

Shotgun's Home of the American Civil War - Among the many topics covered here are biographies and photos of a great many of the major players; battle details and maps; overview of the war; information on available medical care; the navy and the naval war; the army, its organization, and conditions for soldiers. Also included is a section of "Civil War Potpourri," which contains many diverse subjects from boys in the war to the ethnic make-up of the troops, as well as one that presents various essays written about the war. The Time of the Lincolns - based on the PBS film from American Experience.  A site certainly worth visiting.

The Underground Railroad - A journey presented by National Geographic.

 Individual Civil War Sites :

Abraham Lincoln presented by the History Channel.  Pictures and links presented chronologically throughout Lincoln's life.

American Museum of Photography - Has an exhibit of slavery photos.

Artillery, Encyclopedia of Civil War - will eventually describe and provide a picture of every cannon used in the war.  The Artillery Page gives information on weapons and the field artillerists.

Civil War site posted by a school teacher complete with quizzes at the end of each section.

Frederick Douglass, Slavery Fighter - The 19th century abolitionist who escaped from slavery and then risked his own freedom by becoming an outspoken antislavery champion.

A Nation Divided - a posted webquest to explore.

Poetry and Music of the War between the States  - a site posted by Kathy Wilson.  This has won many awards and looks like an excellent gateway to use. 

The Valley of the Shadow - a research project with an interactive site from the University of Virginia.

U.S. Civil War - "The Truth Marches On for Johnny Reb and Billy Yank" - Click on Resources at this school site and find many excellent links for the war.

Reconstruction Period :  America's Story from America's Library - 1866 - 1877 - From the Library of Congress. 

Reconstruction:  The Second Civil War - offers insights into topics in American history including the Civil War, slavery, abolition, race relations, definitions of freedom and citizenship, civil rights, black suffrage and election to political office, impeachment, regional political differences, nationbuilding after war, the cotton economy, sharecropping, federal government intervention in the states, and more.

Voices from the Days of Slavery - "...the opportunity to listen to former slaves describe their lives. These interviews, conducted between 1932 and 1975, capture the recollections of twenty-three identifiable people born between 1823 and the early 1860s and known to have been former slaves. Several of the people interviewed were centenarians, the oldest being 130 at the time of the interview. The almost seven hours of recordings were made in nine Southern states and provide an important glimpse of what life was like for slaves and freedmen."
