We have been having a difficult time collecting money for school meals. School policy allows students to charge 5 meals in grades PK through 8, then an alternate meal will be offered to students. High school students are only allowed to charge 3 meals. We have sent home many letters for overdue accounts to no avail. We are now enforcing the alternate meal policy. I will contact parents to let them know alternate meals will be provided to their child/children until the account is paid in full.
High fructose corn syrup has gotten a lot of attention lately and some manufacturers are taking note. Garelick Farms, the company that supplies our milk, has reformulated some of their products eliminating the high fructose corn syrup. For instance their TruMoo 1% Chocolate Milk has less calories and less sugar than the old formula. The 10 oz size has 30 less calories and 7 grams less of sugar and the 8 oz has 20 less calories and 6 less grams of sugar. There is a lot of discussion about flavored milk these days and how we should only serve the plain white milk. my concern is the calcium intake for our students. I remember when we only offered the plain white milk and how much milk was left in the cartons leaving me to believe that our students were not getting the calcium they needed. Since we switched to the low fat milk flavors there is less waste, which to me, means more of the milk and more of the calcium and other vital nutrients being consumed by students!

All menus and foods served are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Maine Department of Education, and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The goal of the School Nutrition Program is to provide healthy, nutritious, highly accepted and affordable meals to students. Federal regulations require that the average meal eaten over a 5 day period must meet certain guidelines. We use USDA approved computer software to analyze our menus each month.
