LITERACY

"Children become better readers by reading...a lot.  It's that SIMPLE."

Almost every classroom at Hilltop School receives support from trained reading professionals.  This instructional support is delivered to small groups of children in the form of letter work, guided reading groups, and writing assistance.

Reading Recovery®

Reading Recovery® is a short-term early intervention program that provides extra support for first grade children who are having some difficulty learning to read and write.  Although it was first developed in New Zealand, Reading Recovery® has been successfully adapted and tested for several years in the United States.  During this time, it has won the support of parents, teachers, administrators, school board members and legislators.  Research studies document its effectiveness with students in urban, rural and suburban settings.

Reading Recovery® students receive one-on-one instruction for 30 minutes each day.  They remain in the program for approximately 12-20 weeks.  Teachers who have been specially trained in Reading Recovery® procedures and techniques use a wide range of books and help children use their own writing to assist in reading.

Senator Collins Visits Hilltop
Senator Collins made a lengthy visit to Hilltop School.  Her visit made for the purpose to learn more about Reading Recovery® and to view a lesson.  Senator Collins co-sponsored a bill with Senator Edward Kennedy that assists in the financial support of Reading Recovery® on a national level.  The Reading Recovery® teachers, Sue Lockhart, Mary Umphrey and Karen Hewitt enjoyed the opportunity to meet the Senator and to share their perspective of the program and their many successes.
